Are Solar Power Banks Worth It? The Arithmetic

Auf Deutsch lesen: Sind Solar Powerbanks sinnvoll?

The short answer: for charging a large power bank, a built-in solar panel is close to useless. Not because of poor build quality, and not because of the brand. Because of surface area — and that can be worked out with a calculator. Here is the arithmetic that rarely appears on a product page.

How much power does a built-in panel actually make?

The solar panel on a power bank is typically about 10 × 6 cm. That is roughly 60 cm², or 0.006 m².

Under a clear sky with the midday sun overhead, about 1,000 W/m² lands on that surface. Small solar cells reach around 20% efficiency. So:

0.006 m² × 1,000 W/m² × 0.20 = about 1.2 watts

That is the best case — cloudless, midday, panel aimed straight at the sun, cell running cool. In practice it is closer to 0.5–0.8 watts.

What 1.2 watts means for charging time

DeviceCapacityTime to fill at 1.2W
Phone batteryabout 15 Whabout 12.5 hours of full sun
10,000mAh power bank37 Whabout 31 hours
20,000mAh power bank74 Whabout 62 hours
40,000mAh power bank154.4 Whabout 129 hours

129 hours of perfect midday sun is, depending on season and weather, roughly a month of real days — and that is before charging losses. Even a single phone battery needs over twelve hours of the best light there is.

So a built-in cell is not a charger. It is an emergency trickle: enough to put a few percent into a phone over several hours when it matters. For that job it is genuinely useful. For anything else it is not.

Why isn’t my solar power bank charging in the sun?

One of the most common questions about these devices — and usually nothing is broken. Four reasons:

  • Behind glass does not count. On a dashboard or inside a window, much of the useful radiation is lost. The panel needs open sky.
  • Angle decides it. Lying flat instead of tilted towards the sun can easily halve the output.
  • Heat lowers efficiency. A hot cell produces less than a cool one, so the hottest day is not the best day.
  • There isn’t enough current to start. Many power banks need a minimum input before the charging circuit wakes up at all. A 0.5W trickle can fall below it — and then nothing visible happens.

What works instead: separate the panel from the bank

The problem is area, so the answer is more area. A folding panel can be opened out, aimed at the sun, and packed away again — it does not have to fit in a pocket.

A folding 40W panel makes roughly 33 times the power of a built-in cell. For the same 154.4 Wh bank:

SourcePowerTime to fill 154.4 Wh
Built-in solar cellabout 1.2 Wabout 129 hours
Folding 40W panel40 Wabout 4 hours (5–6 in practice)
Mains, USB-C PD100 Wabout 2 hours

A month becomes a sunny afternoon. That is the difference between an emergency trickle and an actual power supply, and it is why people who really do spend days away from a socket carry a separate panel rather than a power bank with a cell glued to it.

For us that pairing is the Ifory 40,000mAh power bank and the 40W solar panel. We deliberately do not sell a power bank with a built-in solar cell, because the arithmetic above does not work.

Common questions

Are solar power banks worth it?

As an emergency reserve, yes. As a charger, no. The built-in cell makes about 1.2 watts in the best conditions — enough to put a few percent into a phone over several hours, not enough to fill the bank itself. Anyone regularly away from a socket is far better served by a separate folding panel.

How long does it take to charge a power bank with solar?

With a built-in cell, a 20,000mAh bank (74 Wh) needs around 62 hours of strong sun and a 40,000mAh bank (154.4 Wh) around 129. With a folding 40W panel the same 154.4 Wh takes about four hours in ideal conditions, realistically five to six.

Can you charge a power bank with solar?

Yes, and with a separate panel it works well. What matters is that the panel has a USB-C output with Power Delivery and the bank charges over USB-C. The two then negotiate voltage between themselves, exactly as they would with a mains adapter.

How powerful should a solar power bank be?

For a cell on the casing the question is unfortunately beside the point — the area caps output at one or two watts whatever the box claims. The useful question is panel size: 20W covers a phone, 40W and up will fill a large bank in a day, and 100W charges a laptop directly.

The figures here assume 1,000 W/m² of irradiance, about 20% cell efficiency and a panel area of roughly 60 cm². Charging losses are not included, so real times will be longer rather than shorter.
